BREAKING NEWS: Greta Thunberg strikes with us in Vienna for our climate and the protection of species. On this occasion she will also give a speech. Seize the opportunity and come to the strike on the 31st of May 2019.
Travel: As there is no school on this day, we invite all people from all over Austria to come to Vienna. If you want to travel together get in touch with your local “Regionalgruppe”. If you’re coming to Vienna from the west of Austria, you can join the group traveling with the “Westbahn” (the tickets will be bought individually on the train, we’ll only make a group reservation), if you plan to do so, please register here.
One million animal and plant species are at risk of extinction. The IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem) of the UN sounds the alarm. Right now, we are facing the 6th mass extinction in the history of Earth. According to an UN-report, the responsible factor is the human civilization. A study conducted by the EU says that even humankind is critically endangered: “A rise in temperature above 1.5 degrees is the maximum the planet can handle”. If the temperature rises any higher it will lead to “the destruction of the weakest members of the population – and in the worst case, the extinction of humankind.” We are at a turning point in history. We have to make a decision. We have to take unprecedented pollution control measures over the next ten years in order to stop the mass extinction and the climate crisis. If we don’t, we’ll head at full speed towards an ecological collapse.
On the 31st of May, Fridays For Future will send a message to policy-makers. Together with Greta Thunberg we will strike in Vienna to call upon politicians to take action against the progressing mass extinction and the climate crisis. Greta will give a speech on this topic, alongside with representatives of different Austrian Fridays For Future local groups.
Greta will strike with us – please make sure to respect her and her privacy at all times. Please also understand that it is impossible for her to have a personal talk with thousands of people, that is why she’ll give a speech in front of everyone!
More than 26,000 scientists united as Scientists 4 Future and declared their support for the youth’s demands. On the 31st of May the Scientists 4 Future and the Artists 4 Future will march for the first time in solidarity with the youth to emphasize the urgency of the situation. #NoFutureOnADeadPlanet.
Science confirms that humankind, biodiversity and life on earth are in a disastrous situation. But if politics and all of us act NOW we can stop the climate crisis and the ecological crisis! That is why it is more important than ever that each and everyone raises their voice: WE’LL STRIKE UNTIL YOU ACT!
